Design For Mobile: Vertical vs Landscape Videos

If you’re in the social space, you might’ve heard the phrase “Design for Mobile” before. But what exactly does this mean?

“Designing for Mobile” means creating your content so that someone scrolling on a phone has the best user experience. According to Statista, 98% of Facebook users access Facebook on a mobile phone, while less than 20% access it on a computer. This is important to note when it comes to content creation!

As far as video goes, shooting your video vertically is the best way to optimize user experience and the real estate available on a mobile phone. Facebook recommends creating videos that are aspect ratios of 1:1 (square) or 4:5 (vertical).

You can create these videos by either:

  • Shooting video vertically right on your phone

  • If using a camera, turn your camera sideways to film

  • Cropping your video to a square during editing

We all know time is of the essence on social media — we have seconds to catch someone’s attention scrolling through their feed. So since vertical videos take up much more space on your phone, they’re far more likely to catch attention and provide a better user experience.

When it comes to Facebook & Instagram, designing videos to accommodate a vertical screen is giving your video the best chance to be viewed!
